पंचकर्म

Panchakarma Therapy

Classical Ayurvedic preparatory and cleansing procedures — including Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam) — planned only after assessing individual suitability.

Panchakarma (पंचकर्म — “five actions”) is one of the best-known systems of classical Ayurveda. At our centre, Panchakarma-based procedures are planned individually and only after an assessment of your health and suitability.

Introduction to Panchakarma

In Ayurveda, Panchakarma is a structured programme intended to support the body’s natural processes of cleansing and renewal. A traditional programme has three stages: Purvakarma (preparation), Pradhanakarma (the main procedures) and Paschatkarma (aftercare, diet and gradual return to routine).

Traditional Ayurvedic Principles

Classical texts describe health as a balance of the three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — and good digestion (agni). Panchakarma aims to restore that balance through preparation with oils and heat, specific procedures and careful diet. These are traditional concepts; modern research on Panchakarma is still developing, and benefits differ between individuals.

Common Panchakarma Procedures

Ayurveda traditionally describes five main procedures — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Not every procedure is suitable for every person, and not all of them are offered at our centre. The preparatory procedures below are the most widely used.

Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage)

A full-body massage with warm, medicated or herbal oil, applied with rhythmic strokes. It is traditionally used to relax muscles, ease stiffness and prepare the body for further procedures.

Swedana (Herbal Steam)

Swedana is a herbal steam treatment, usually given after Abhyanga in a steam cabinet with the head kept outside. The warmth is traditionally used to relax the body, loosen stiffness and support a feeling of lightness. Sessions are kept short and monitored closely.

Available at our centre: Abhyanga and Swedana (herbal steam bath). Please ask our team about any other Panchakarma procedure — we will tell you honestly whether it is offered here and whether it is right for you.

Individual Assessment

Before Panchakarma, the doctor reviews your health history, current medicines, blood pressure, digestion and energy levels. Some people are advised a gentler programme, a different therapy, or medical review first.

Preparation & Aftercare

Before your session

  • Have a light meal 2–3 hours before
  • Drink water as usual
  • Tell us about all medicines and conditions
  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting oily

After your session

  • Rest; avoid strenuous exercise that day
  • Avoid cold drinks and cold exposure
  • Prefer warm, simple, easy-to-digest food
  • Drink water to stay hydrated

Who May Benefit

Adults seeking relaxation, relief from general stiffness, or a structured Ayurvedic wellness programme, who are medically stable and able to follow aftercare advice.

Safety & Suitability

Steam and some Panchakarma procedures may not be suitable, or need modification, if you have:

  • Pregnancy or are breastfeeding
  • Heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or a history of fainting
  • Diabetes with poor control or nerve damage in the feet (heat sensitivity)
  • Fever, acute infection, recent surgery or skin conditions
  • Kidney disease, severe weakness, dehydration or very low body weight
  • Elderly or frail health (shorter, gentler sessions)

During steam: tell the therapist immediately if you feel dizzy, breathless, nauseous or unusually hot. Sessions are stopped at once if you feel unwell.

What to Expect

Most people find Abhyanga and Swedana deeply relaxing. You may feel warm, light or sleepy afterwards. The doctor will advise how often sessions are appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Panchakarma a “detox” that removes toxins?

“Detox” is a traditional Ayurvedic concept. We explain Panchakarma in those traditional terms but do not make medical claims about removing specific toxins. Your liver and kidneys carry out the body’s natural cleansing.

Do you perform all five Panchakarma procedures?

No. We currently offer Abhyanga and Swedana. Please ask us about any other procedure before booking.

Can Panchakarma help with weight loss?

Steam can cause temporary fluid loss, which is not fat loss. Lasting weight change comes from diet, activity and sleep — areas our doctor can guide you on.

I have diabetes or high blood pressure. Can I take steam?

Possibly, with precautions. The doctor will check your readings and history first, and may suggest shorter sessions or an alternative.
